New in the Exegenix Conversion System

Exegenix announced new user interfaces to the ECS at XML 2002 in Baltimore in December. The ECS now consists of the following modules:

The ECS Engine

The automated process that converts submitted documents individually from PDF/PostScript to XML output.

The ECS Inspector

A new interface that enables further streamlining of the conversion process via user-directed actions, if required.

The ECS Inspector allows users to examine structures and text identified by the ECS Engine, and add value to the output XML prior to export.

Example:

A series of financial reports from different organizations contains images that are fundamental to the data (charts, graphs, etc) as well as photographs of corporate executives. Logos of partners and significant customers are also included, in addition to the organizations' corporate logos. In other words, the reports contain many images which will be used in different ways - the executive photographs and the logos, for example, are unlikely to be of interest to a reader scanning for specific financial data.

During the conversion process for these reports, the ECS Inspector would enable a non-technical user to classify the images (chart, person, logo, etc) via simple point-and-click. This would automatically flag the XML output, enabling post-conversion processes to put, for example, chart and graph images in a table of contents, whilst cross-referencing photographic images in an "executive officers" index, or even excluding them altogether if desired.

This is a very simple example of the process we call “hinting”, but the underlying capacity for a non-technical user to direct the conversion output is tremendously powerful.

Hints can be applied to a single page, a series of pages, a whole document or an entire datastream (in our example above, the entire series of financial reports from different organizations).

Administration Interface

A versatile configuration module adapted to each organization's specific requirements, forming the basis of a flexible workflow framework.

Insider Information

Hyphenation

Exegenix has technology to correct hyphenation. Soft and hard hyphens are distinguished using an algorithm that takes into account various clues including capitalization, dictionary lookup and document lexicon. It can be customized with a word list. This step can be replaced by your own de-hyphenation technology or processes if required.

Special characters

Special characters are encoded as ISO entities where possible (which are in turn defined in terms of Unicode character references) or directly as Unicode character references. Character references are expressed in decimal notation for SGML compatibility.

If you have a specific technical query about the XML output produced by the ECS, please contact Ryan Germann, Product Manager.
