New in the ECS

Enhanced support for borderless tables, tables of contents, and inline titles

As part of our continuous technology improvement program, Exegenix is pleased to announce the availability of enhancements to the ECS Engine, the core component of all Exegenix conversion solutions.

Tables: One of the greatest challenges in automated conversion is the interpretation of column separators in sparsely-populated, borderless or mixed-border tables. Exegenix table conversion technology has always been the best in the business and our latest enhancements have significantly widened this lead.

Dot leaders: Items in tables of contents/figures/tables are often followed by dot leaders that draw the eye across the page from the TOC entry to the page number. The ECS Engine can now uniquely identify these as inline objects of type "Leader". For applications where dot leaders are not significant, this enhancement makes it easy to retain only the proper table structure itself.

Inline Titles: This paragraph is an example where the "Section Title" is itself part of the paragraph. The ECS Engine now ensures that Inline Titles result in "Section" objects, with the appropriate text in either a "title" object or regular "para" objects.

These enhancements are available now to all Exegenix Conversion System and Satellite customers at no additional cost. For more details, please contact Amol Jadhav, Customer Support, via amol@exegenix.com.

Resources

FREE! Sample File Conversion

It's easy to send us a sample of your content for conversion to XML, and it's free! Just visit our upload page at www.exegenix.com/solutions/sample/ to submit documents between 10 and 30 contiguous pages long in PDF Normal or PostScript format.

All XML output will be returned to you via email. Output for each sample file consists of the following:

  • Exegenix Export XML
This file contains XML conforming to the Exegenix Export DTD (a superset of DocBook). It illustrates the versatility of our output, containing both structure elements and format attributes, and can be easily transformed to the DTD of your choice.
  • XHTML
For quick viewing in a browser

Note that we individually review each sample that is uploaded so, though the actual conversion process is automated, the submission process is not.

For other input formats, or for transformation to a specific DTD, please contact Sachin Deshpande, Senior Account Manager

FREE! Demo CD

Now you can see Exegenix technology in action at your own pace, and whenever it's most convenient for you. Our popular online demo center is now available on CD, and includes a comprehensive video of the ECS Inspector (the QA interface to both the Exegenix Conversion Satellite and the Exegenix Conversion System), along with background information on XML conversion, and a comparison of different conversion methodologies.

Contact Sachin Deshpande to request your Demo CD.

Industry Brief: XML Conversion and Accessibility

Not only is it good business sense to ensure content accessibility for all users, it is now a legal requirement in many countries. In the USA, accessibility is mandated by legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Instructional Materials Accessibility Act (IMAA). In the UK and Australia, the Disability Discrimination Act can be (and has been) invoked.

Read the full brief to understand how Exegenix can help you avoid the pitfalls, by delivering content valid to DTDs such as DAISY, OeB, and Digital Talking Book.
